Celebrating 25 years of the Ardbeg Committee!

In 2023, we invited some of our most loyal Committee Members to the West Maltings at the Distillery to participate in a top-secret experiment named Operation Smokescreen. Unbeknownst to them, they were influencing the next Ardbeg Committee Exclusive – and a very special one, at that. 

In celebration of 25 years of the Ardbeg Committee, we unveil Eureka! A skillful marriage of PX sherry casks combined with roasted malt spirit matured in bourbon casks and offered at 52.2% alcohol strength. Anticipate juicy red apples and plump cherries on the nose, with signature smoke and fresh coffee granules. The palate explodes with nut toffee brittle, raisin fudge and dark fruits, running to a long and chewy finish with sweet treacle toffee and burning embers.

PX sherry & roasted malt spirit matured in bourbon casks, ABV 52.2%. 70cl.

Aroma:

Full and fruity on the nose with cherry and juicy red apple. Caramel infused coffee grounds and cocoa powder are softened with a retrained smoke initially of heather bonfire and hand rolled sweet tobacco leaves. There are some herbal notes like cedar & fennel present in the distant background. With water dark chocolate and walnut oil comes through and more smoke emerges through the sweeter fruits. Like walking alongside a road that’s being freshly tarred!

Taste:

An explosion of sweet flavours like nut toffee brittle, raisin fudge and dark fruits (fig, damson and plump cherries) is balanced with a rockpool salinity or salted crispy seaweed. Dark chocolate coated raisins lead into chicory and sweet cinnamon spices alongside a curious drying sensation. The smoke builds up to a crescendo of sweet applewood and a medicinal iodine, burnt moss and ash. 

Finish:

The finish is long and chewy with sweet treacle toffee aniseed spice, coal tar soap and burning embers.

A Committee Release for 2024

Released in 1997, over 25 years ago, 17 Years Old was a peaty pioneer that paved the way for future Ardbegs. Beloved by the Committee, it was one of the first bottles to leave the Distillery’s doors after reopening. Now, as it leaves once more, this legendary dram traces the old profile note by note. Renewed, 17 Years Old returns home…just as extraordinary as it was before. 

Fresh pine resin, enticing aromas of malted barley and toasted bread perch on the palate. Delicate notes of cocoa powder and caffé latte soar alongside hints of oak smoke and chewy aniseed toffee. The peat returns for an enormously long finale. Welcome back, 17.

Aroma:

Fresh and clean, with hints of pine resin, aniseed, sea spray and lavender soap- very gentle, very restrained, and rather elegant for an Ardbeg. With water, there is a distinctive, flinty minerality, along with subtle hints of sweet peat smoke, malted barley, and a touch of toasting bread.

Taste:

A beautiful, creamy texture is followed by a lovely combination of flavours, with aniseed toffee, café latte, fennel and gentle antiseptic soap. The peat smoke is present, but in a very restrained manner, and leads into a lingering aftertaste with chewy oak, cocoa powder and tar.
